The SOGC Supports Health Canada’s Statement on Diane-35
Health Canada (HC) says that the benefits of Diane-35, an acne drug that is often prescribed “off-label” as a contraceptive, continue to outweigh the risks, when used as authorized.
The HC statement was issued last Friday (May 17, 2013) following an investigation of reports of blood clots related to the use of Diane 35. Blood clots are a rare but well-documented, side-effect of oral birth control pills and other hormonal products such as Diane-35.
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada issued a policy statement in February concluding that the risk of venous thromboembolism in Diane-35 users is very low and comparable to that other combined hormonal contraceptives.

Maternal mortality: New fact sheets from the PHAC
Surveillance results on recent trends in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity are now available from the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System (CPSS). These fact sheets are updates of previous versions which were released in 2011 and provide a means to disseminate up-to-date information on maternal mortality and severe morbidity in Canada.
In the maternal mortality fact sheet, maternal mortality rates were calculated using hospitalization data rather than vital statistics data as recent work by the agency’s CPSS has shown that hospitalization data are more comprehensive and timely.
